Chapter 15
âJason said I could change in here. He didnât think youâd mind sharing.â I heard Genevieve close the door.
Glancing over my shoulder, I saw she wasnât looking directly at me so dropped the letters at my feet and covered the noise by coughing.
âWhy are you looking in there?â She stared now.
The bed shielded my feet, but she could see the open drawer. âOhâ¦umâ¦do you think he has any safety pins in here? The seam on my bathing suit has a snag, and I thought I could secure it.â
âYou might find something in the bathroom.â She threw her bag onto the other side of the bed and began to disrobe.
âGood idea.â I picked up my own tote, and let it slip to the floor. âI am all thumbs today. Ever have one of those days, Genevieve?â
âI know what ya mean.â Sheâd already pulled off her top and worked at the hooks of her bra. This, I did not need to see. âSome days I can be such a klutz.â
Bending to get my bag and slipping the bundle into it, I stood. âYou know what? Maybe I should go ask him rather than looking myself. Iâll leave you to your privacy.â
âNo worries, hon. Weâre both girls, right?â
I turned away before Genevieve and all her glory came bursting out of the released harness. Yes, weâre both girls, but I didnât need to bond that intimately. Going to the door, I cracked it wide enough to slip out.
Murphy blocked the way. âYouâre the dame that fell in the water at the dock. I recognize you now. But you were with another guy. That your husband?â
Drat. âHusband? I wouldnât be here with Jake if I were married.â
âOh, I get it. You got one on the side. Me too. Donât say nothinâ to Genevieve. Sheâll get all pouty and ruin our fun. Maybe me and you can come to some kindaâ¦ya knowâ¦agreement to keep each otherâs secret.â His fingertips brushed up and down my shoulder. Revulsion shuddered through my body. âYa know what I mean, donât ya, doll?â
I took a step backward and bumped into the door. âJake and I are friends. Thereâs nothing for me to hide.â My hands balled into fists. I wanted away from this slimy character. âBut Iâll keep your secret. Excuse me, I need to get by.â
He didnât budge.
Swelling out my chest to give him a blast of my indignation, I realized too late how Murphyâs attention dropped to below my chin. Well, that backfired. I shifted my bag to cover as much of my front as possible and broke his concentration.
âNo worries. I think Iâll see if Genevieve needs a hand.â He pushed past me into the bedroom.
Heâd need both hands with her chassis. I reached into the sack and made sure my pilfered stash rested on the bottom underneath my clothes. Hopefully, Jason wouldnât miss the letters for a while. I found Jake in the cockpit, already in his bathing suit. At least he hadnât thought I needed assistance getting dressed.
